Agronomic performance of maize hybrids under supplemental irrigation depths AGRIAMBI
Ben,Luis H. B.; Peiter,Marcia X.; Robaina,Adroaldo D.; Kirchner,Jardel H.; Mezzomo,Wellington; Pimenta,Bruna D..
ABSTRACT The choice of a maize hybrid, considering the technology level and irrigation management, contributes to the improvement of the plant productivity and water use efficiency (WUE). Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of irrigation depths on production components, grain yield, technical efficiency, and WUE in maize hybrids. The experiment was conducted in Santiago, RS state, Brazil, in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 crop seasons, using a randomized block design in factorial scheme, consisting of five irrigation depths (0, 50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and four maize hybrids in crop season I (2015/2016), and six maize hybrids in crop season II (2016/2017). The number of ears per plant, number of grains...

Agronomic performance of sugarcane families in response to water stress Bragantia
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Soares,Rogério Augusto Bremm; Landell,Marcos Guimarães de Andrade; Campana,Mário Pércio.
Water deficit is one of the major factors limiting the production of sugarcane, especially in areas where there is a prolonged period of water deficiency, such as the West Central Brazilian region. One way to overcome this problem is to cultivate resistant or tolerant varieties. An experiment was set up at the Jalles Machado Sugar Mill, located near Goianésia, Goiás State, Brazil, to evaluate agronomic performance of several sugarcane families. A comparative analysis was carried out among the families under two irrigation regimes, one under regular environmental conditions and another under monthly irrigations during the period of water deficiency. Evaluated families consisted of 25 progenies planted in a factorial design with three replications with 20...

Approximate Entropy as a measure of complexity in sap flow temporal dynamics of two tropical tree species under water deficit Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Gustavo M.; Ribeiro,Rafael V.; Santos,Mauro G.; Ribeiro,Henrique L.; Oliveira,Ricardo F..
Approximate Entropy (ApEn), a model-independent statistics to quantify serial irregularities, was used to evaluate changes in sap flow temporal dynamics of two tropical species of trees subjected to water deficit. Water deficit induced a decrease in sap flow of G. ulmifolia, whereas C. legalis held stable their sap flow levels. Slight increases in time series complexity were observed in both species under drought condition. This study showed that ApEn could be used as a helpful tool to assess slight changes in temporal dynamics of physiological data, and to uncover some patterns of plant physiological responses to environmental stimuli.

Aroma composition of Tempranillo grapes as affected by iron deficiency chlorosis and vine water status Scientia Agricola
Sánchez,Ramón; García,María-Rosa González; Vilanova,Mar; Rodríguez-Nogales,José-Manuel; Martín,Pedro.
ABSTRACT: Water deficit and iron nutritional deficiency (iron chlorosis) are frequent environmental stresses affecting grapevine production in the Mediterranean region. The objectives of this work were (i) to study the combined effects of both stresses on aromatic profile of Tempranillo grapes, occurring simultaneously in the vineyard, and (ii) to evaluate the viability of foliar chlorophyll content at veraison (Chl) to early assess aromatic quality potential of grapes in those conditions. Twenty non-irrigated vineyard subzones (10 m × 10 m each), affected and non-affected by iron chlorosis, were monitored in Ribera del Duero Appellation of Origin (North-Central Spain) during two consecutive seasons. Factorial ANOVA was performed to study the effects of...

Asymmetrical leaves induced by water deficit show asymmetric photosynthesis in common bean Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Souza,Gustavo Maia; Viana,Juliana de Oliveira Fernandes; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that leaf asymmetric growth induced by water deficit in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) might be correlated with different net photosynthesis rates between the two opposed leaflets (right and left) considering a bilateral symmetric plane. In order to induce developmental instability, the drought-sensitive common bean genotype "Jalo Precoce" was subjected to periods of suspended irrigation during its vegetative growth. Developmental instability was evaluated by measurements of leaflets asymmetry, and the effects of drought on gas exchanges were taken in both symmetrical leaflets (right and left) in relation to the central leaflet. Water deficit induced an increase of 80 % in leaf asymmetry. Net photosynthesis of P....

Climatic characteristics of the 2010-2016 drought in the semiarid Northeast Brazil region Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARENGO,JOSÉ A.; ALVES,LINCOLN M.; ALVALA,REGINA C.S; CUNHA,ANA PAULA; BRITO,SHEILA; MORAES,OSVALDO L.L..
ABSTRACT This study discusses the climatological aspects of the most severe drought ever recorded in the semiarid region Northeast Brazil. Droughts are recurrent in the region and while El Nino has driven some of these events others are more dependent on the tropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature fields. The drought affecting this region during the last 5 years shows an intensity and impact not seen in several decades in the regional economy and society. The analysis of this event using drought indicators as well as meteorological fields shows that since the middle 1990s to 2016, 16 out of 25 years experienced rainfall below normal. This suggests that the recent drought may have in fact started in the middle-late 1990s, with the intense droughts...

Climatic effects on sugarcane ripening under the influence of cultivars and crop age Scientia Agricola
Cardozo,Nilceu Piffer; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The lack of information about the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on the sugarcane (Saccharum ssp.) crop yield and quality has been the primary factor impacting the sugar-ethanol sector in Brazil. One of the processes about which we do not have a satisfactory understanding is sugarcane ripening and the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on that. Sugarcane ripening is the process of sucrose accumulation in stalks, which is heavily influenced by several factors, mainly by climatic conditions such as air temperature and water deficits. Because it is a complex process, studies of the variables involved in sugarcane ripening can provide important information, resulting in a better use of commercial cultivars, bringing advantages to growers,...

CLIMATOLOGICAL WATER BALANCE WITH DATA ESTIMATED BY TROPICAL RAINFALL MEASURING MISSION FOR THE DOCE RIVER BASIN REA
Louzada,Franciane L. R. de O.; Xavier,Alexandre C.; Pezzopane,José E. M..
ABSTRACT The Climatic Water Balance (CLIMWB) is very used in the climatic characterization and can also offer important contribution in the identification of the water demand for irrigation of a region. For this, reliable precipitation data with good spatial coverage is required. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite -TRMM-3B43-v7 is a partnership between NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), which estimates rainfall data for the tropics region. The aim of this study is to evaluate the CLIMWB obtained by the Thornthwaite & Mather method (1955), with estimated rainfall data with the 3B43 product versus those generated with rainfall data and to map pixel-by-pixel water...

Combined effects of low light and water stress on Jatropha curcas L. promotes shoot growth and morphological adjustment Acta Botanica
Carneiro,Isabella Christina Silveira; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão; Souza,João Paulo.
Jatropha curcas (physic nut) is a plant with economic and pharmaceutical uses. Basic studies on the influence of environmental factors on the early development of J. curcas are important for improving farming techniques and increasing productivity. This study investigated the adjustments of J. curcas to the environmental factors of drought and light stress in order to determine which factors most strongly affect the allocation of biomass during early growth. Leaves, stems, and roots of young plants were sampled and leaf area was measured during January and June in 2011. Plants of J. curcas that were grown in shade and subjected to water stress showed higher biomass allocation to aerial parts (mainly stems), which can be explained as a strategy for...

Comparison between climatological and field water balances for a coffee crop Scientia Agricola
Bruno,Isabeli Pereira; Silva,Adriana Lúcia da; Reichardt,Klaus; Dourado-Neto,Durval; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Volpe,Clóvis Alberto.
The use of climatological water balances in substitution to complete water balances directly measured in the field allows a more practical crop management, since the climatological water balances are based on data monitored as a routine. This study makes a comparison between these methods in terms of estimatives of evapotranspiration, soil water storage, soil available water, runoff losses, and drainage below root zone, during a two year period, taking as an example a coffee crop of the variety Catuaí, three to five years old. Climatological water balances based on the estimation of the evapotranspiration through the methods of Thornthwaite and Penman-Monteith, can reasonably substitute field measured balances, however underestimating the above mentioned...

Different physiological responses under drought stress result in different recovery abilities of two tropical woody evergreen species Acta Botanica
Frosi,Gabriella; Harand,Wolfgang; Oliveira,Marciel Teixeira de; Pereira,Silvia; Cabral,Simone Pereira; Montenegro,Abelardo Antônio de Assunção; Santos,Mauro Guida.
ABSTRACT The effects of water deficit on physiological and biochemical variables of young plants of two tropical woody species, Pachira aquatica and Sterculia foetida, and their recovery abilities were measured. Leaf water potential, gas exchange and selected carbon metabolism components were measured in a greenhouse experiment with control, moderate and severe water deficit treatments. Under severe drought stress, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence decreased in both species compared to their respective controls. After rehydration, P. aquatica and S. foetida showed a partial and full recovery of the measured variables, respectively. In addition, a decrease and an increase in photosynthetic pigments were observed for P. aquatica and S. foetida,...

Differential response of photosynthetic activity, leaf nutrient content and yield to long-term drought in cacao clones Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Jaimez,Ramón; Loor,Rey; Arteaga,Francisco; Márquez,Víctor; Tezara,Wilmer.
Abstract Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is not frequently cropped in water limited environments, however it is cultivated in several drought-prone regions, where soil water is gradually depleted on an annual cycle. In regions where cacao is subjected to long periods without precipitation, the physiological responses under field conditions may differ between cacao clones. Evaluation of these responses are required to select potential clones that could be used for breeding programs in the context of future climatic scenarios. In order to identify physiological and yield responses to drought of 10 Ecuadorian cacao clones, relative leaf water content (RWC), CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs), water use efficiency (WUE),...

Ecophysiological leaf traits of native and exotic palm tree species under semi-arid conditions Bragantia
Oliveira,Deborah; Medeiros,Maria; Pereira,Silvia; Oliveira,Marciel; Frosi,Gabriella; Arruda,Emília; Santos,Mauro.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of two palm species under semi-arid conditions during the rainy and dry periods: the semi-arid native Syagrus coronata and a native to tropical America, Acrocomia aculeata. The leaf water potential, gas exchange, leaf soluble sugars, starch, free amino acids, total soluble protein content and morphological traits were measured. The highest leaf water potential and CO2 assimilation values in both species were achieved during the rainy period. In response to the low soil moisture content during the dry period, gas exchange decreased 72 and 92% in S. coronata and A. aculeata, respectively, when compared with values from rainy period. As evergreen plants, both species maintained intact leaf...

Ecophysiological responses to drought and salinity in the cosmopolitan invader Nicotiana glauca Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
González,Armando; Tezara,Wilmer; Rengifo,Elizabeth; Herrera,Ana.
Nicotiana glauca, a shrub native to southern South America, is widely distributed in the Americas, from Patagonia to the USA, from zero up to 3,700 m; it rapidly invades disturbed environments. In Venezuela, it has been reported from zero up to 2,000 m growing in contrasting conditions of relative humidity, temperature, rainfall, and salinity. In order to gain insight into the extent and mode of resistance to drought and salinity in N. glauca, we studied the effect of these factors on water relations and photosynthesis under both natural and greenhouse conditions. In the field, water potential, photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs), but not relative water content (RWC) decreased because of drought. Manual removal of epicuticular wax...

Effect of Glyphosate on Guineagrass Submitted to Different Soil Water Potential Planta Daninha
SILVA JR.,A.C.; GONÇALVES,C.G.; SCARANO,M.C.; PEREIRA,M.R.R.; MARTINS,D..
ABSTRACT: The action of herbicides on weeds that develop under water deficit can be compromised, because the routes of penetration of hydrophilic herbicides are reduced due to the lower hydration of the cuticle in these plants. Moreover, hydrophobic compounds found in the epicuticular wax coating of plants under water stress, hinder the penetration of hydrophilic compounds. This study evaluated the control efficiency of glyphosate on guineagrass plants when submitted to different water deficits. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, and treatments were composed of guineagrass plants submitted to three soil water conditions [low water deficit (13%), intermediate water deficit (10%) and high water restriction (8%)], three doses of glyphosate (0.0, 270.0...
